Local festival pledges support to Doorway

The annual Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival, which runs next month (15 – 16 June), is hoping to raise over £2,500 for local charity Doorway after choosing the organisation as the recipient of its Elizabeth Coles Award.

Created to honour the founder of the festival, this award gives 25 per cent of the funds raised to the chosen charity.

Doorway’s mission is to offer homeless, vulnerable and marginalised individuals a safe, empowering and non-judgmental environment, support them to take meaningful steps out of homelessness and remain safely housed.  We provide an open access drop-in centre twice a week at the Salvation Army hall in Chippenham, also offering practical essentials such as a hot meal, shower, use of phone and internet, food take-out bags, toiletries and clothing, and activities such as table tennis, arts and crafts, writing and music.  Doorway also runs a weekly Football group and Women’s Group (who are busy preparing a scarecrow for the trail).

“Doorway is a local charity that does great work to support the homeless in Chippenham, and those at risk of losing their home. It’s our pleasure to support this organisation, which works tirelessly to support those in need in our local community,” says Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival Committee Chair Steve Howe.

“We are so grateful that Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival is supporting us this year.  We depend on the generosity of local groups and individuals for the financial support to keep running, and, even in picturesque rural Wiltshire the need for our services is ever-present. This will also be an opportunity to help us raise awareness in the local community.”  Lisa Lewis, Chief Executive of Doorway says.

The Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival
This is the 19th year the festival has been held and families will be able to visit more than 60 different scarecrows, this year themed around ‘brands’, which are scattered around a village trail.

As well as the scarecrow trail, festival-goers will be able to enjoy local bands and artists, craft stalls and circus skills workshops, as well as enjoy BBQs, beers, Pimms and cream teas. There will even be a ‘scrapheap challenge’ competition for visitors to make their own scarecrows.

Everyone is welcome to come to the Kington Langley Scarecrow Festival on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 June from 10am to 5pm. Parking is available and Doorway will also be there to talk about the work that they do.
